Chinalco And China Hongqiao Call For Cleaner Aluminium Production

Aluminum Corp of China and China Hongqiao Group issued a joint proposal last week describing their industry’s contribution to national net-zero carbon emissions, which includes reduction in emissions, energy conservation, and production of low-carbon metal.

The companies’ plan is part of a wider initiative by Chinese president Xi Jinping to turn back its rising carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality in 2060.

The seven-point plan called for an emphasis on clean technology and energy efficiency and an increased use of sustainable power sources such as hydroelectricity, solar power, and wind energy. The plan also advocated for an increase in aluminium recycling as well as strict capacity and output controls.

Altogether, the plan calls for production of alumina and aluminium to reach its highest point in the next four years before declining. Currently production of both is on the rise, with last year seeing the country produce 37.08 million metric tons of aluminium, which was a record high. The plan announced last week contemplates an annual aluminium capacity of about 45 million metric tons.
